ME 103: Product Realization: Design and Making

Winter 2023

Skills: CAD, Hands-on Manufacturing (Turning, Milling, Sand Casting, Assembly), Design Process

Objective: Make a product that is meaningful to you in the Stanford Product Realization Lab (PRL). Utilize two manufacturing processes.

Outcome: A muscle roller to use after practices, specifically in reaction to my shoulder surgery I had undertaken a year prior.

Fabrication

Turned handles:

Internally threaded and machined to desired length of 4.0 cm to fit my hand.

Milled/Turned Roller Pieces:

Used a lathe to drill/ream desired hole through the plastic. Used indexing head to grate the grooves around the piece. Sanded the corners for a seamless finish.

Assembly

I designed my manufacturing processes in the order for assembly to ensure the upmost precision to fit together in the simplest way with correct tolerances.
